CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – A woman who initially reported that she was stabbed on Green Street on Tuesday evening later recanted that story, and police determined that there is no ongoing threat to campus.
The initial report prompted an Illini-Alert emergency notification that was sent to all students, faculty and staff. University Police promptly issued a follow-up “all clear” notice when their investigation determined that there never was a threat to the safety of campus.
Police initially were called around 9 p.m. Tuesday by a Carle Foundation Hospital Security Guard to report a woman with a stab wound in the ER.
Upon arriving at the hospital, a U. of I. Police officer met with the victim, who reported the stabbing occurred around 8:40 p.m. in the area of Fifth and Green streets, Champaign, while she was working as a food delivery driver. Additional officers responded to the location of the alleged stabbing.
Officers could not corroborate the victim’s story with security camera footage, and through further communication with officers, the victim admitted no one approached her and that she was not stabbed.
After confirming there was no threat to campus safety, UIPD Telecommunicators issued the all-clear Illini-Alert.
