University Police arrest man for weapons charges

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – University of Illinois Police officers arrested a Champaign man early Sunday for multiple weapons charges. 

19-year-old David T. Ugalde of Champaign was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated assault, violation of an order of protection, resisting and obstructing a peace officer and a FOID card violation. 

University Police officers were dispatched to Joe’s Brewery, 706 S Fifth St., Champaign, at 12:19 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 2, for reports of an armed subject. The first officer was on scene in one minute. 

Once on scene, officers spoke with the reporting person, who explained that multiple individuals reported there was a male on the top floor who brandished a handgun. 

Officers made contact with Ugalde, who was initially uncooperative, and located a pistol in the front waistband of his pants. Officers also located two loaded magazines and a pocket knife on his person. 

Ugalde was taken to the Champaign County Jail, where he remains as of Monday afternoon.
