A U. of I. student reported Tuesday that she was the victim of deceptive practices. The student received a text message Oct. 20 from a person purporting to be Chinese police who said that the student’s passport was implicated in illegal activity. The scammer told the student she needed to pay the police to avoid prosecution, and the student transferred $315,903 to an unknown account via a mobile banking app.

A U. of I. student reported that his bicycle had been stolen overnight Monday or Tuesday outside his apartment in the 500 block of East Healey Street, Champaign. The bicycle, which has an estimated value of $300, was locked to a rack.*

A U. of I. student reported that his vehicle’s catalytic converter had been stolen between Saturday and Monday while it was parked in the 2000 block of South Orchard Street, Urbana. The estimated cost to repair the vehicle is $2,000.

Frank L. Wesley, no address provided, was arrested at 7:49 a.m. Tuesday at a restaurant in the 900 block of West University Avenue, Urbana, for trespassing on state-supported property. The restaurant manager, who recognized Wesley and was aware that he previously had been issued a no-trespassing notice for all U. of I. property, called police. The restaurant is in a university-owned building.

Ricky L. Grosvenor Jr., 23, of Woodland, Illinois, was arrested at 1:18 a.m. Tuesday outside a bar in the 100 block of East Green Street, Champaign, for aggravated battery. Grosvenor struck a bar employee in the face while the employee was attempting to break up a fight between Grosvenor and another person. The employee was taken to a local hospital for treatment of head injuries.

A U. of I. student reported Monday that he had been the victim of deceptive practices. The student received a call from a person purporting to be a local police officer who said the student was implicated in illegal activity and needed to pay $950 to avoid being arrested. The student purchased gift cards and transferred the card information to the caller as payment.

A U. of I. student reported that her cellphone had been stolen between Saturday and Monday from Oglesby Hall, 1005 W. College Court, Urbana. It is unknown how the $750 phone was lost, but GPS tracking information showed that someone had taken it from the building.

A U. of I. student reported that two pairs of headphones had been stolen from his vehicle overnight Oct. 26-27 while it was parked in a garage in the 200 block of East University Avenue, Champaign. No information was provided on whether the vehicle was locked. The headphones have a total estimated value of $600.

A U. of I. student reported Saturday that his bicycle had been stolen overnight Sept. 19-20 outside his apartment in the 0-100 block of East Armory Avenue, Champaign. The bicycle, which has an estimated value of $228, was locked to a rack.*

A U. of I. student reported that she had been the victim of sexual abuse at 3:15 a.m. Saturday inside a vehicle traveling in the 800 block of South Lincoln Avenue, Urbana. The offender touched the student inappropriately without consent. The student struck the offender and exited the vehicle. The offender then drove away.
