A U. of I. student reported that miscellaneous items including a laptop computer and a passport had been stolen from her vehicle between 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday while it was parked in the 700 block of South Fourth Street, Champaign. The vehicle was unlocked.
A U. of I. student reported that her cellphone had been stolen around 1 a.m. Friday when it fell out of her pocket at a business in the 700 block of South Fifth Street, Champaign. GPS tracking information showed that it had been taken to a residence in the 900 block of South Third Street, Champaign.
A U. of I. student reported that a package had been stolen between 11:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after it was delivered to the mail area of her apartment in the 100 block of East Daniel Street, Champaign. The package has an estimated value of $44.
At 11:56 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of East Green Street, Champaign, a U. of I. student and U. of I. employee were struck with small projectiles believed to have been fired from a toy gun in a passing car while they were walking on the sidewalk. No injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
Ebiobowei E. Berezi, 24, was arrested Wednesday at his residence in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, Urbana, for leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury and on a Champaign County warrant for failure to appear in court. Police initially were called at 8:39 p.m. Tuesday for a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident near Fifth Street and Springfield Avenue, Champaign. A vehicle reportedly struck a pedestrian in the roadway and drove away. Using security cameras and license plate readers, investigators identified the vehicle, whose registered owner is Berezi. The pedestrian, a U. of I. student, sustained broken bones and was cited for illegally walking in the roadway.
At 10:10 a.m. Wednesday near Fourth and Daniel streets, Champaign, U. of I. student Erin S. McKenzie, 22, of Champaign, was issued a state of Illinois notice to appear in court for leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury. Police initially were called by a driver who reported that another vehicle had struck his in the 400 block of East Daniel Street, Champaign. Information about the license plate was provided to police, and they found that McKenzie had returned with that vehicle to the 400 block of East Daniel Street after initially driving away. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
At 1:07 p.m. Oct. 21 at their apartment in the 0-100 block of East Armory Avenue, Champaign, U. of I. students Caleb M. Mason and Connor W. Rhodes, both 21, were issued state of Illinois notices to appear in court for the manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. Investigators with the Champaign County Street Crimes Task Force obtained a search warrant for the apartment following an investigation into suspected drug activity. They found cocaine, Xanax, ketamine, psilocybin mushrooms, dimethyltryptamine, cannabis and drug packaging materials.
