University of Illinois Police investigating criminal damage

URBANA, IL – The University of Illinois Police Department is seeking help from the community in identifying two individuals who may have information about a criminal damage incident that occurred on campus.

At 4:04 a.m. on April 8 UIPD officers were dispatched to Foellinger Auditorium after being called by staff who discovered paint on the building’s exterior.

Once on scene, an officer observed damage to all six columns, the sidewalk and the entrance doors. The damage requires extensive labor to remove.

UIPD telecommunicators checked security cameras in the area and located footage of three people dressed in all-black clothing vandalizing the building.

A second UIPD officer in the area observed an individual matching the clothing description. When the officer activated his emergency lights, the person started running before stopping 15 feet away.

The individual was identified as U. of I. student Adam T. Ahmed, 20, of Champaign. Ahmed was arrested for criminal damage to government supported property and resisting or obstructing a peace officer. He was transported to the Champaign County Jail, where he remains as of Tuesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing, and UIPD investigators are reviewing security camera footage and evidence collected at the scene. Police continue to seek any evidence or information collected by witnesses that will lead to the identification of the other two individuals.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the University of Illinois Police Department at 217-333-1216. Witnesses may remain anonymous by calling Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (373-TIPS), by visiting 373tips.com or by providing information through the P3 Tips mobile app available on iOS and Android.
