Three arrested in incident that prompted notice

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – One adult and two juveniles were arrested Friday evening after police identified them as the offenders in an Aug. 22 incident that prompted public safety officials to send a campuswide alert.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. on Aug. 22, a man reported he was walking near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Wright Street, Champaign, when he was struck from behind with a tree branch. The victim reported three men were present when he was repeatedly struck and his backpack was taken. The offenders then ran south and left the area on a MTD bus.

The incident was reported to police approximately 30 minutes after the incident. The victim, who is not a U. of I. student, was familiar with one of the offenders and refused medical treatment at the hospital.

On Friday, police went to speak with that alleged offender and his mother. The other two people involved, another juvenile and Isaiah R. Rhoads-Linzy, 18, of Champaign, were also present at the time of the interview.

They all admitted to being involved in the encounter, stating that they and the victim are all familiar with each other, and words were exchanged before the altercation became physical.

Rhoads-Linzy was arrested for aggravated battery, mob action and armed robbery (with the tree branch being used as a weapon). He was taken to the Champaign County Jail. The two juveniles were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.
