One arrested for domestic violence, weapons charges

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – University Police arrested a man on Saturday for brandishing a weapon and battering another person.

Tristan Banks, 34, of Chicago, was arrested for domestic violence and weapons charges. He is being held at the Champaign County Jail.

Around 7:40 p.m. on Saturday, University Police officers were dispatched to a report of an armed subject at a tailgate in Lot 31 near the intersection of Kirby Avenue and Oak Street in Champaign. Witnesses reported seeing Banks flash a gun in the waistband of his pants and grabbing a woman by the neck.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene and located the suspect. Upon searching of Banks, officers found two loaded handguns and two additional pistol magazines.

Through interviews with multiple witnesses, it was determined the woman involved in the altercation was an ex-girlfriend who Banks had a history of domestic violence-related incidents with.

Banks was arrested for domestic violence and weapons charges for possessing a firearm in a prohibited area and while under the influence.
