Gun recovered, one arrested on weapon offenses

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – University of Illinois Police recovered an illegal gun and arrested a 25-year-old man for weapon and drug offenses late Monday night near campus.

A University Police officer initially stopped a vehicle at 11:07 p.m. Monday near Green and Wright streets, Champaign, because it had a headlight out. Upon approaching the vehicle, an officer smelled a strong odor of burnt cannabis.

The driver, Shandon L. Hillsman, 25, of Urbana, gave a freshly rolled cannabis cigarette to the officer and admitted to having recently smoked cannabis, which was enough evidence to allow officers to perform a legal search of the vehicle.

Officers found multiple bags of cannabis and a scale.

They also found a handgun with a fully loaded magazine, an empty extended magazine, and a switch capable of converting a semiautomatic handgun into a fully-automatic gun.

Hillsman’s Firearm Owner’s Identification previously had been suspended.

He was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, armed violence and delivery of cannabis. He was taken to the Champaign County Jail, where he remained as of Tuesday morning.

Please note, those arrested are presumed innocent until proved guilty, and formal charges may change as cases are adjudicated.
