CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Motorists should expect traffic delays Sunday morning as athletes participate in the Tri the Illini 2019 triathlon.
The race will begin at 8 a.m. in the pool at the Activities and Recreation Center, 201 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign. From there, the athletes will bicycle from the ARC and head south on First Street, eventually out to Old Church Road and High Cross Road in Urbana, and then back to the ARC. The race will conclude with a 5-kilometer run through campus.
Most streets will remain open during this time, but public safety officials will be holding traffic at certain intersections to allow for the safe passage of race participants. The University of Illinois Police Department is advising that motorists avoid campus if possible on Sunday morning.
The majority of campus streets are expected to be clear by 1 p.m. on Sunday.
In particular, it is expected that attendees of the C-U Church service Sunday morning at the I Hotel and Conference Center, 1900 S. First St., Champaign, will be affected. To avoid delays, church-goers should use Green Street or Springfield Avenue to get to Lincoln Avenue, and travel south on Lincoln Avenue to St. Mary’s Road. The I Hotel will be accessible from the east via St. Mary’s Road. This route will enable motorists to reach the location of the church service without encountering race traffic.
The University of Illinois Police Department appreciates our community members’ patience and cooperation as we work to ensure the safety of all those participating.
