University of Illinois Police Department

Welcome from Police Chief Craig Stone

Dear campus community member:

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a world-class institution, and our mission at the University Police Department is to maintain a safe and secure environment where education, research and public service can flourish. When you are here, you are part of the Illinois family. And like in our own families, our first priority is keeping you and your loved ones safe. We will not waver in that mission.

Our values at the University of Illinois Police Department are founded in the ideal of community-based public safety, where everyone is treated equally and with dignity. We value honesty and ethical behavior in our staff, and above all, we are committed to treating our community members with the utmost respect and fairness.

Officers at the University of Illinois Police Department are fully sworn just like at any traditional police department, but the services we provide are specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of a college campus. Our patrol officers, detectives, crime prevention officers, emergency planning staff and others are dedicated to the cause of campus safety. More than 1,800 security cameras are installed at various locations on campus to deter crime and to assist in the identification of offenders. Our force is supplemented by officers from neighboring agencies, making our campus the most densely patrolled area in our region.

Still, our best crime prevention tool is our community. We need your partnership. By staying informed about public safety issues, being proactive in preparing for emergencies and reporting suspicious activity, we can maximize our ability to keep our campus community safe. I encourage you to explore the resources we provide and to use the informational tools here to learn more about public safety issues. Consider taking a self-defense class or attending a safety presentation. Use SafeWalks if you need someone to walk with as you travel at night. Sign up for Illini-Alert text messages to be promptly notified of emergencies. These resources are just a few examples of tools designed to reduce your risk of being targeted by a criminal and to get you the information you need to protect yourself in an emergency.

My promise to you is that we will stay committed to keeping you and your loved ones safe while you are on our campus. On behalf of the entire University of Illinois Police Department, we look forward to seeing you on campus, and thank you for being an active partner in the safety of our community.
